Swill (organic) waste
From food waste to biogas
Swill is a collective term for (cooked) food waste, which is mainly generated in kitchen environments. This includes prepared and unprepared leftover food that will not be consumed. It is collected in 120L mini containers that are exchanged. The collected swill goes to a digester in which harmful bacteria are killed using heat in the first process. In the fermentation process that follows - a sort of biological improvement process - one of the products that is released is biogas, which is a sustainable energy source. The digestate that remains after fermentation makes a valuable fertiliser.
