Our role in a circular economy

We are determined to be a driving force in the circular economy, creating a more sustainable future with lower greenhouse gas emissions. We do this by striving for higher recycling rates and thus avoiding CO₂ emissions. Our approach helps preserve valuable raw materials and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Our path to decarbonisation

We are focusing on reducing the carbon intensity of our collection and operations with targeted measures:

  • More sustainable waste collection: increasing the share of EURO-6 and electric trucks in our fleet.

  • Energy consumption:in our operations, we aim to use 100% renewable electricity on-site.

  • Sustainable transport: increasing the share of hybrid and/or electric company cars.

  • Innovation: researching carbon capture technologies to reduce process emissions.

Our efforts and processes have a tangible impact on the fight against climate change and resource preservation. Specifically, our actions contribute to CO₂ avoidance in the supply chain by:

What we do:

  • Waste: We recycle waste and often turn it into valuable raw materials, our circular materials.

  • Water: We treat wastewater and contribute to the circular water cycle in local ecosystems.

  • Energy: We produce energy with a low CO₂ footprint (renewable electricity and fuels with a low CO₂ footprint).

Towards higher recycling rates: more sustainable resource management

Renewi focuses on improving recycling rates and preserving valuable raw materials. We sort and recycle within the circular economy, and where avoidance, reuse, or recovery is not feasible, we ensure more sustainable processing of the materials.

By bringing circular materials back to the market, we reduce the extraction of primary raw materials, resulting in the avoidance of millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Our progress: We are working towards a recycling rate of 75%. With the current recycling rate at 66%, we have already prevented millions of tonnes of waste from being incinerated or landfilled. This ensures that materials can be reintegrated into material cycles. In the future, we will continue focusing on acquiring more incoming materials so that we can produce more high-quality circular materials.
