Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

Our Board of Directors (‘Board’) guarantees strategic leadership and forward-looking decision-making. The non-executive directors bring broad international experience from various sectors. As independent members, they play a crucial role in critically assessing and further developing strategic proposals. Moreover, they actively participate in, and lead, various committees on the Board. The executive directors focus on implementing the strategy set by the Board. Together, the Board of Directors and the Executive Leadership Team form a strong and focused leadership team committed to the success and sustainable growth of our company.

Ben Verwaayen

Ben Verwaayen, MSc

Chairman
Appointed: April 2020

Ben has had an extensive and versatile career, during which he has held managerial positions with several leading companies. He was CEO at Alcatel-Lucent SA and BT plc and held the roles of vice chairman and chief operating officer at Lucent Technologies Inc.

He has also served as president of KPN and was a non-executive director at Bharti Airtel. Ben has also made significant contributions as chairman of several business and industry associations, including the CBI Energy and Climate Change Board in the UK. He is currently a non-executive director at Ofcom and Akamai Technologies Inc. and co-founder of venture capital firm Keen Venture Partners LLP. He holds a master's degree in Law and International Politics from Utrecht University.

Allard Castelein

Allard Castelein, MD

Senior Independent Director
Appointed: January 2017

Allard successfully completed his studies in medicine before embarking on an international career in the energy sector. He held various senior positions at Shell in several countries, culminating in his appointment as Vice President Environment at Royal Dutch Shell in 2009.

From 2014 to 2023, he was President and CEO of the Port of Rotterdam. Currently, Allard holds various board and supervisory roles. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of SBM Offshore N.V. and Heijmans N.V., and a non-executive director of Associated British Ports PLC. He is also chairman of the Supervisory Board of both the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Erasmus Trust Fund. He also sits on the Supervisory Board of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. Allard is the Dutch government’s Special Envoy for Critical Raw Materials, contributing to the Netherlands' strategic interests in this area.

Jolande Sap

Jolande Sap, MSc

Independent non-executive director
Appointed: April 2018

Jolande chairs the Social Impact Team, which advises the Dutch government on the social impact of pandemics and other disruptive crises. She is a member of the Management Board of the Netherlands Emissions Authority, Vice-Chair of the Supervisory Board of KPMG, and a member of the Supervisory Board of Royal KPN N.V.

She is also committed to several social initiatives, including the Smoke-free Table of the Dutch National Prevention Agreement, the Springtij Forum and the Impact Economy Foundation, which she chairs. From 2008 to 2012, Jolande was a member of the House of Representatives for GroenLinks, where she was party leader from 2010. Prior to her political career, she worked as an economist and held various managerial positions in science, policy and business. Her positions included head of the Income Policy Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and director of the LEEFtijd expertise centre, a consultancy specialising in sustainable employment. Jolande received her degree in economics from Tilburg University.

Luc Sterckx

Luc Sterckx, MSc, PhD

Independent non-executive director
Appointed: September 2017

Luc started his career at Exxon Chemicals and later became CEO of Indaver. He then joined the Executive Committee of PetroFina, where he was Managing Director of Fina Holding Germany and group senior vice-president responsible for global SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) matters.

He later became CEO of Oleon, where he achieved a successful management buyout. In 2005, Luc was appointed CEO of SPE-Luminus, the second-largest energy and gas company in Belgium, created following a multi-party merger. He has since further specialised in corporate governance and energy, and is a certified international director and specialist in internal governance through INSEAD. Today, Luc holds various non-executive and advisory positions, with his expertise focusing on energy and chemicals, renewable energy and corporate governance.

Neil Hartley

Neil Hartley, MA, MBA

Independent non-executive director
Appointed: January 2019

Neil is a partner at Velocity Partners, a private equity firm that invests in companies focused on supporting the energy sector. His expertise is in renewable energy integration, emission reduction, energy efficiency, decarbonisation of industrial processes and upgrading existing energy infrastructure.

Neil holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated from Oxford University in Engineering, Economics and Management. He brings with him 18 years of experience in private equity. Prior to his current role, he spent six years at Simmons & Company International, where he specialised in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and capital raising within the energy sector. Before that, he was a management consultant at McKinsey & Company Inc. He also worked at Schlumberger, where he spent seven years in technical and managerial positions, including as field service manager and field engineer. Neil's broad background combines technical expertise with financial and strategic skills in the energy sector.

Kathleen Vandeweyer

Katleen Vandeweyer, MSc

Independent non-executive director
Appointed: December 2022

Katleen has extensive experience in finance and auditing, most recently serving as Deputy Chief Financial Officer at Proximus SA, a listed Belgian provider of digital services, communications and ICT solutions. She held this role until July 2022.

Before her time at Proximus, she held executive positions as CFO at Worldline S.A. and Arthur Andersen. Katleen is currently active as a non-executive director at Fedrus International BV, Ageas Group, AG Insurance and Vantiva S.A. She is a member of the audit committees of Ageas Group, AG Insurance and Vantiva, and also holds the position of audit committee chair at Vantiva. She previously served on the Boards of Ion Beam Applications, bpost bank, Connectimmo N.V., Scarlet N.V. and the Proximus Pension Fund. Katleen holds a degree in Applied Economics from the University of Leuven. Her expertise in financial management, auditing and corporate governance makes her a valuable advisor and supervisor.

Otto de Bont

Otto de Bont, MSc

Chief Executive Officer
Appointed: April 2019

Otto has been Chief Executive Officer since April 2019. Before that, he was Managing Director of Renewi's Commercial Waste Netherlands division, where he played a key role in the successful integration of Shanks Group plc with Van Gansewinkel Groep B.V. Before Renewi, Otto held various senior positions at renowned companies

including United Technologies' Otis, Carrier and Chubb divisions, as well as General Electric's Plastics and Security divisions. During his career, Otto has gained extensive international experience working in Belgium, Germany and the United States. At United Technologies, he held various management roles for six years, including the position of president of Chubb Continental Europe. Otto holds an MSc in Engineering from the University of Twente. He is also a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the TNO Energy and Materials Transition Unit, where he contributes to innovative solutions for sustainable energy and circular economy.

Annemieke den Otter

Annemieke den Otter, MA, RC

Chief Financial Officer
Appointed: June 2022

Annemieke joined the Board of Directors in June 2022. Prior to that, she was CFO at ERIKS, a global engineering company with sales of €1.7 billion and part of the SHV group. From 2016 to 2021, she held the role of CFO at Ordina, a Dutch listed software company.

Earlier in her career, she worked for three years at VolkerWessels, one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands. She also gained experience at ING and Macquarie Bank and spent five years in London. Since 2020, Annemieke has been a member of the Supervisory Board of ForFarmers N.V., an international organisation providing feed solutions for the livestock industry. Her broad expertise in finance and operations is enhanced by her strong academic background: she obtained a Master’s in English and Literary Studies from VU Amsterdam and a post-master's degree in finance and control from Erasmus University Rotterdam, making her a Chartered Controller (RC).

Mark  Thys

Mark Thys

Chief Operating Officer Commercial Waste

Mark joined Renewi in May 2021 as Managing Director Commercial Waste Belgium. Prior to his role at Renewi, he was Global Chief Transformation Officer at Eurofins Scientific, where he was responsible for large-scale transformation programmes. Before that, he had a successful career at Goodyear Dunlop, where he held various international roles and senior positions, including Managing Director International Sales and Operations, Managing Director France & Benelux, and EMEA Business Transformation Leader.

Mark combines a strong academic background with extensive experience in transformation and leadership roles. He holds an MSc in Commercial Engineering from Hasselt University and an Executive MBA in Business Management from KU Leuven.

Kwafie Janssen

Kwafie Jansen

Chief Operating Officer Specialities

Kwafie Jansen joined Renewi as Chief Operating Officer (COO) Specialities in January 2025. With more than 25 years of experience in operational and strategic leadership roles, Kwafie brings extensive knowledge and expertise. Kwafie built a track record at leading companies such as Vattenfall and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE). In her most recent role as General Manager of JDE Professional Netherlands, she was responsible for the Dutch professional market, where she achieved sustainable growth and took customer satisfaction to the next level.

She has also proven to be a strong leader in operational excellence and safety. Kwafie holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Fontys University of Applied Sciences and an MBA from Nyenrode Business University. Her background in engineering, combined with her strategic vision and experience in sustainable operations, makes her particularly well suited to strengthening the growth and development of Renewi's Specialities division.

Kirsten Yperman

Kirsten Yperman

Chief Human Resources Officer

Kirsten assumed the role of interim Chief Human Resources Officer at Renewi in April 2024, after joining the company as HR Director Belgium in 2022. Prior to her time at Renewi, Kirsten held several senior HR positions at Stanley Black & Decker. Her last role there was Senior HR Director Commercial Central East Europe Region & Finance EMEA ANZ.

She also has experience as Talent Management Director EMEA ANZ, in which she was responsible for talent management at regional level. Kirsten holds a Bachelor’s in Marketing from Karel de Grote University College and completed several strategic HR courses at Vlerick Business School. Her strong background in international HR policy and talent management forms a valuable contribution to Renewi's success.

Bruno Bruins

Bruno Bruins

Chief Strategy Officer

Bruno joined Renewi as Chief Strategy Officer in May 2024. Prior to his role at Renewi, he held various political positions in the Netherlands. He was most recently a member of the Council of State and previously served as State Secretary of Education, Culture and Science and as Minister of Medical Care and Sport.

In business, Bruno has held senior positions in the transport sector, including as a member of the Board of Directors of Connexxion Holding NV and as acting Managing Director of HTM NV. He is also socially active as a member of UNICEF and chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Alrijne Care Group. He also chairs the advisory boards of Keolis and Yris BV. Bruno studied Dutch Law and Public Administration at the University of Groningen. His broad experience in both the public and private sectors makes him a strong strategic leader within Renewi.

Theo Olijve

Theo Olijve

SHEQ Director

Theo joined Renewi in June 2019 and was appointed Managing Director of the Mineralz & Water division in March 2020, following a restructuring of the division. Before joining Renewi, he spent more than 25 years in senior management positions within the petrochemical industry and bulk liquid terminals.

At LyondellBasell, Theo held the position of Divisional Vice President, where he was responsible for restoring operational performance and compliance following a safety shutdown in 2012. In 2017, he opted for a role as an independent management consultant, further expanding his expertise. Theo holds a Master's in Chemical Engineering from the University of Groningen.

Marieke van Wichen

Marieke van Wichen

Director of Communications

Marieke joined Renewi in July 2022, bringing with her more than 15 years of experience in international marketing and communications. Prior to her role at Renewi, she held various international communications positions in both the B2B and B2C sectors. Most recently, she was globally responsible for internal and external communications within Philips' consumer division.

Earlier in her career, Marieke worked in the advertising industry, developing marketing campaigns for the Dutch market. She combines her broad experience in strategic communications and marketing with a strong focus on results-oriented work. Marieke holds a bachelor's degree in Communication.

Ans Verlooy

Ans Verlooy

Director IT

Ans was appointed Group IT Director in November 2023, having started in 2022 as IT Director for the Commercial Waste Belgium division at Renewi. She brings considerable experience in IT leadership, gained through various senior IT positions at companies such as Argenta, Colruyt Group, Johnson & Johnson and ING Belgium.

Since joining Renewi, Ans has played a crucial role in the development and implementation of the Flexible Delivery Model. This model ensures a close alignment between strategic business goals and IT deliverables, providing a solid foundation for Renewi's digital progress. Ans continues to expand her professional skills through ongoing training and certification. Her certifications include those in data protection, Prince 2 project management and as a Scrum Master. She is currently training as a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
