Renewi, Nordsol and Shell have partnered to build the first commercial bio-LNG plant in Europe.

The new installation at Renewi Organics in Amsterdam Westpoort is an addition to our existing industrial digester, and will open its doors on October 14, 2021.

Bio-LNG represents a clean alternative to fossil fuels. It has almost zero particulate matter emissions and generates 80% fewer greenhouse gases compared to conventional diesel.

Renewi, Nordsol and Shell each play their own role in the production of bio-LNG. Renewi collects organic waste throughout the Netherlands from restaurants, the retail sector and the food processing industry to then process it and convert it into biogas via anaerobic digestion in our plant. Nordsol then cleans and liquefies the methane within the biogas (60%) into bio-LNG and the CO2 (40%) into liquid bio-CO2. Shell ultimately sells the bio-LNG in its fuel stations to power heavy-duty trucks and short-haul shipping. The liquefied bio-CO2 will be instead used in horticulture and has great potential in sustainable chemistry.

This circular innovation promotes greener transportation and reduces reliance on fossil fuels while contributing to a more circular economy, as the installation is set to produce 3.4 kilotons of bio-LNG per year. This number is equivalent to about 13 million CO2-neutral kilometres for an average truck.
