Coolrec’s ROCKEEES keep rocking!
12 July 2021
WEEE recycler Coolrec, a subsidiary of waste-to-product organisation Renewi, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2021 with ROCKEEES, a sustainable toy made from plastics from discarded fridges. ROCKEEES stems from a collaboration with the Dutch design agency Apollo-11 and the injection moulding company Injection Point. The Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2021 winners will be announced on 5 November, during the second day of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe at the RAI Amsterdam.
Developing and producing ROCKEEES starts with discarded refrigerators which Coolrec depollutes and shreds into different waste streams such as metals and plastics. Density and electrostatic sorting further separate the plastic into different polymers, which are then turned into granulates with tailor-made compositions to satisfy the customers’ needs. ROCKEEES are made with Coolrec’s Coolstar – granulates made of 100% recycled HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene Granule) and a sustainable alternative to virgin polymers. Injection Point uses these granulates to create ROCKEEES. Since December 2020, ROCKEEES are available for purchase on rockeees.com or bol.com.
“I’m very proud of this nomination,” said Dieter Avonds, Managing Director at Coolrec. “Not only does ROCKEEES show to the public the importance of collecting, separating and recycling their waste, but also that recycled plastic’s applications are increasing and its quality is so good that we can make toys with it. Making toys from waste proves once again that Coolrec keeps leading the charge in the European plastic recycling industry.”
Open to organisations and individuals across Europe who are involved in the recycling of plastic materials, the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe are organised jointly by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) and Crain Communications, organisers of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe.
